500 W floodlight build

500W portable floodlight on a 2.8 m tripod

About 75,000 lm from a head that a two person crew can place and aim in minutes. The size that covers a road patch, a loading bay or a yard without a mast.

Lumen output is calculated from the rated efficacy. A tender that needs a measured figure should ask for the test report for the exact head and beam.

What 500 W does on a tripod

75,000 lm aimed at 60 degrees from 2.8 m covers a working area of a few hundred square metres at a usable level, which is a road patch, a loading bay or a compound gate. The same head at 30 degrees throws further and lights a narrower strip.

The head is directional on purpose. Unlike a balloon it has a defined edge, so the placement is decided by where the beam lands, not by where the tripod stands.

  • Beam angle against distance: 10 degrees at 20 m is a small pool, not a lit area.
  • Head weight against tripod rating, and the mast height needed to clear vehicles.
  • Whether the site needs asymmetric optics to avoid spilling into a live lane.

IP66 and the heat path

The head is sealed against dust and water jets, which is what a site needs and not what a floodlight usually gets. The trade is heat: a sealed aluminium housing has to move 500 W of LED loss through fins rather than through airflow.

That is why the housing is die cast aluminium with a finned back, and why the head should not be wrapped or covered on site. A blocked heat sink derates the head within an hour.

Power and mounting

500 W at 230 V draws a little over 2 A, so a standard site supply or a 1000 W power station runs it. On a station, expect about four hours from 2,000 Wh.

The same head mounts on a tripod, a mast or a cart. A pair on a 2.8 m tripod is the common arrangement for road work, with one aimed down the trench and one at the approach.

  • Cable length and plug type for the local supply.
  • Whether the head will run from a station or a generator, and for how long.
  • Spare head, because a single lamp is a single point of failure on a night job.

Before the order

  • Beam: pick the angle by distance, then check the spill.
  • Heat: never cover the fins, and leave clearance behind the head.
  • Supply: about 2.2 A at 230 V, with the plug type for the market.
