Power stations

Light tower power station: 1000 Wh and 2000 Wh

Two stations that run a lamp with no mains and no generator: 300 W continuous from 1000 Wh, and 1000 W continuous from 2000 Wh. The runtime is arithmetic, not marketing.

Continuous output is the figure that matters for lighting. A surge rating only covers motor starts, and a lamp has no surge.

Runtime on a real lamp

A 240 W lamp on the 1000 Wh station gives about four hours. The same station on a 600 W head gives under two. The 2000 Wh station gives about six hours on a 320 W lamp and just under two on a 1000 W head.

Those figures assume a warm battery and a full charge. Cold weather and an old battery both reduce them, so a shift that ends with the lamp on is a shift that planned for margin.

  • The lamp wattage the station will run, and the length of the shift.
  • Whether the station can be recharged between shifts.
  • Cold weather, which cuts usable capacity.

Station or generator

A station costs more per watt hour than a generator and gives less runtime at high load. What it buys is silence, no exhaust, instant start and the ability to stand indoors or next to people.

The break point in practice is around 600 W. Below it a station is competitive; above it the runtime becomes too short to be useful and a generator or a mains supply is the honest answer.

Using both

A generator charging a station during the day, and the station running the lamp at night, keeps the engine away from the working area. It also means the lamp does not flicker or dip when a tool starts on the same supply.

For a fleet, the stations are interchangeable across carts and heads, which is why they are worth specifying once for the whole fleet rather than per tower.

Before the order

  • Load: continuous output, not surge.
  • Runtime: capacity divided by lamp watts, less about ten percent.
  • Charging: a charging window is part of the shift plan.
